ALTÆR SAUNA
“The concept of a mobile sauna combines our desire to be within nature as well as a desire to come back to Self.”
Building the Silky Sifaka Mobile Sauna
Founder of Altaer Sauna, Kayla Sibilia, came to me with the plans to build her second mobile sauna. Her traditional cedar & wood stove saunas pop up over RI/MA at peaceful and inspiring locations, creating community through healing, nature and art. She was looking for a panel design that was in line of her intentions for this next sauna build - The Silky Sifaka, named after an angelic white lemur found in Madagascar.
The silky sifaka panels were designed to create a space upon entering and stepping out of the sauna. A pause; a place for reflection and appreciation of the beauty of life. It is based in themes of play, interconnection, and expression - all part of the overall vision for the sauna community gatherings. It is joyous and expansive with a nod to the silky sikafa - the guardian of Madagascan jungles.
PAnel Material
Durability is essential for this project build considering the sauna is subject to the New England outdoor elements. We chose to use Skatelite, a paper and resin based material designed by Richlite. It is a sustainable material made from 100% recycled products using closed loop waste-to-energy manufacturing process. Skatelite looks like a natural wood tone being both elegant and low maintenance, never needing stain or paint. Each panel measures 2’x8’
